According to mythology, it was Sage Markanda, master weaver of Gods, who is known to be the inventor of Kanjeevaram Silk sarees. The descendants of the Sage, who hail for small town of Tamil Nadu known as Kancheepuram, have, continued with the tradition of weaving Kanjivaramsarees since 400 years. Kanjeevaram silk sarees gained immense popularity during the reign of King Krishna Devaraya who was in love with the golden sheen produced by the sarees.

The border of original saree will always be in contrast with the garment. The reason for this being, weavers are known to weave the garment and the border separately, prior to joining them into one.

Zari

While, original and traditional Kanjeevaram silk sarees always use pure gold and silver threads for the zari work, manufacturers of fake and cheap imitations of Kanjeevaram silk saree-afford to use the same, for costing reasons.

Silk mark

Thanks to the GI (Geographical Indication) status earned by Kanjeevaramsarees, the original product will always carry a Silk Mark, similar to hallmark, which is an indication of their authenticity.
